Photo essay · editor's pick

“You keep looking for the machinery and there isn't any. Just a channel in the rock and a very long drop.”

The guide

The walk

The main scenic section follows the channel for about two kilometres with a railing on the valley side. Flat, narrow and exposed; hats blow away.

Context

The memorial hall at the entrance sets up why the canal was cut. Twenty minutes there makes the walk read as engineering history rather than scenery.

Practical notes

  • Combine with the Taihang Grand Canyon for a full day from Linzhou
  • Bring sun protection; the cliff path has almost no shade
