Editor's introduction

Anyang is not a stopover

Written from two reporting trips, checked against local opening hours in 2026.

Anyang is where Chinese writing begins. The oracle bones dug out of Yinxu in the 1890s pushed recorded Chinese history back by centuries, and the site itself is a low, grassy ruin that rewards a guide more than a ticket. The Chinese Character Museum in town explains what the scratches mean, and the old city around Wenfeng Pagoda is a working, unhurried place with breakfast stalls that open before dawn. Most travellers come for half a day; give it a full one and you can add the museum and a proper meal of flat noodles. It is an hour and a half from Zhengzhou by rail, on the line toward Beijing.
