Zhengzhou is the province's transport hub and its most misunderstood city. Most visitors change trains here and never leave the station, which is a mistake: the Henan Museum holds one of the best bronze and jade collections in the country, the Shang dynasty city wall still stands in the old centre, and Only Henan is a purpose-built theatre complex that stages the province's history in nineteen separate rooms. The city is also the easiest place to eat well cheaply, from braised noodles at breakfast to the seafood stalls along the river parks. Give it one full day, two if you want the museum without rushing. Everything else in Henan is within a two-hour train ride.
