The short version
Kaifeng (开封) rewards 2 days, reached via 20 min from Zhengzhou by rail. It suits travellers interested in heritage, folk life, food streets. The best window is Mar–May, Sep–Nov. The headline sights are Millennium City Park. Start eating with Soup Dumplings.
Written from two reporting trips, checked against local opening hours in 2026.
Kaifeng was the largest city in the world in the eleventh century, and it still behaves like a place that expects company after dark. The Song capital left a grid of lakes, a wall you can walk, and a night-market culture that predates most of Europe's. The rebuilt Qingming Riverside Landscape Garden is the obvious set piece; the quieter pleasure is eating your way through the Drum Tower stalls and the old lanes behind the bookstore street. One full day is enough for the gardens and the night market; two days lets you add the Iron Pagoda, the synagogue site and a half-day in the surrounding county towns. It is twenty minutes from Zhengzhou by rail and pairs naturally with Luoyang.
